The Minerâs Ten Commandments were the only rules many miners lived by in their camps.
THE VEINS RUN DRY
Most of the easy-to-reach gold was gone by 1851. At that point some miners quit working their own claims. Instead they worked for wages for large mining companies. Some companies dug deep mines. Others blasted jets of water at streambeds. They hoped to uncover gold buried beneath the rocks. Miners extracted about $81 million of gold in 1852. Then the figures declined. In all, more than 750,000 pounds (340,194 kg) of gold were mined during the Gold Rush.
A few miners found wealth. Most found only disappointment. Hiram Pierce of Troy, New York, left behind a wife and seven children in search of riches. After two years in California, he sold his shovel for $2. He headed home with nothing to show for all his work.
âI have made an honest effort,â Pierce wrote. âI will no longer sacrifice all that is dear on earth or worth living for, for the hope of gain.â
